What Is Warehouse Security?

Warehouse security is the protection of a warehouse, depot or distribution centre by trained security officers. It covers who gets onto the site, which vehicles come in and out, what goes onto a lorry, and who is on the floor during and between shifts.

In practice it means an officer on the gate booking in drivers and vehicles, someone watching the loading bay while goods are moved, checks that what leaves matches the paperwork, cover through night shifts and shutdowns, and a written record of it all.

It is different from securing an office or a shop, because the risk sits inside the process rather than at the front door. Most warehouse loss is small, repeated and internal — which is why secure warehousing depends on supervision at the points where stock changes hands, not just an alarm on the wall.

Where Warehouse Losses Actually Come From

Warehouse security is the protection of a warehouse, depot or distribution centre by SIA-licensed officers — controlling site and vehicle access, supervising loading bays, checking goods against paperwork, covering nights and shutdowns, and recording it.

It depends on the number of entry points, your vehicle traffic and whether the site runs shifts. A single-gate depot on one shift is usually one officer; a site with a manned gate, a busy loading bay and a night shift typically needs two to three across the day. We work it out on a site walk rather than quoting a number blind.

They book in vehicles and drivers, supervise the loading bay, check loads against paperwork, patrol the aisles, racking and yard, support exit checks at shift change, and lock the site down at the end of the day.

Our officers start from £19 per hour. What you’ll actually pay depends on hours, officer numbers and whether you need nights and weekends — we quote clearly after a site walk.

Officers can support exit and bag checks, but only under your own written search policy and with staff consent as your policy sets out. The policy is yours; we carry it out consistently and record it.

It can affect how your risk is assessed, but it depends on your policy. Some insurers require manned cover or recorded checks for certain stock; others simply take it into account. We can’t promise a lower premium — check your policy wording or ask your broker. What we can give you is the written record of gate logs, patrols and incidents, which is what insurers ask for when a claim is made.
